Inspiring Change in Others

How Can You Be an Inspiration For Change in Others?

A careless word may kindle strife. A cruel word may wreck a life. A timely word may level stress. But a loving word may heal and bless.” – Unknown

InspireOthers-HCJoeRaymondPerhaps as you have worked on the changes you want to make in your own life, you have run up against obstacles that seemed overwhelming, obstacles that made you want to quit working on your goal. Then, someone came along and said or did something that fed that fire within you, and you were ready to take on your challenge once again. You can be that same inspiration to someone else, you can be the force that inspires them in their journey to make the change that brings them closer to their potential.

One of the best ways you can do this is by…

Building Bridges of Understanding and Trust

Your ability to inspire change in others relates directly to the level of trust between you and them. Trust is the key to all relationships. People are more likely to trust someone they believe to be honest. This means your words and actions need to be congruent.

Another element of trust is that people perceive you as capable and competent. For example, you may trust me as your counselor or coach, because I have the proper credentials and experience; you perceive that I can add value to your life. During our counseling or coaching relationship, I have the capability of proving that to be true, which will further build your trust in me.

However, would you trust me to repair your car? I would advise against it! Nevertheless, you would most likely trust a good, honest mechanic for that job.

The following steps help in building others’ trust in you:

  1. Practice self-discipline and work consistently for self-improvement.
  2. Show respect for others even though they may have a different perspective of life than you do. Always speak respectfully to and about others.
  3. Be honest and clear about your expectations and intentions. Make only those promises you intend to and can keep.
  4. Acknowledge your own mistakes and correct them. Make amends where you need to do so.
  5. Have an attitude of serving and adding value.

Inspiring change in others accelerates change in yourself…

InspiringEachOther-HCJoeRaymondYou will likely discover that, as you learn the principles of inspiring change in others and as you apply them in your daily interactions, you will see additional changes you want to make in yourself. This is normal. Your personal growth will accelerate as you seek to make a difference in other people’s lives. Keep in mind, change comes from invitation and influence, not from power and control. As you go forward, I invite you to apply these principles for building trust and understanding.

As you continue to work on yourself, and work on building relationships of trust with others, your influence for good will be felt not only by those close to you but by people wherever you go.
